This does occasionally happen with breeders with the best intentions but as everyone knows, s**t happens! How do you dispose of these unwanted animals? Enquiring minds want to know. D.D. What are the options? Culling the dogs? Placing them in homes that are suitable for them? Keeping them until they die? Any more? I share with you my experience. I bred a dog that was terribly unsound. He was, luckily, the only one on his litter. I didn't have the heart to put him down. I definitely didn't want anyone else dealing with him. I kept him. Until the day he died. He lived to be 3 and died of what my vet told me was an aneurysm created by a brain tumor. The repeat breeding was a pup (yes, only one again) with outstanding temperament, a long coat that became a family pet. The owners never had a problem with him. He lived to be 12. I breed a litter of 9 about 10 years ago. One puppy came back an adult, he had been beaten so severely his ears were broken. He left a good dog, came back a real problem. I took him back, of course, and kept him thinking I could "fix" him. That was not to be. I had to ask my vet to put him down. We never had a problem with the rest of the pups, the dam had impeccable temperament as did the sire. The owners of the sire took 2 pups out of the litter, they liked them so much. This was a SEL. dog whose temperament I loved. None of those pups became show dogs, unfortunately, but they were all good pets. Yes, s**t does happens. But I can't imagine any breeder breeding so many spooky dogs where disposing of them (that is a terrible choice) is a real issue. God, I hope not. I just think we need to aim for the moon, if we fall short we are still among the stars.
