Here is an image I took one morning while flying my ultralight around some clouds (see "me on cloud"). This was as about 7500 feet agl and right against the edge of the cloud itself. The dark lines in the image are the "Flying wires" that brace the wing. As the pilot sits right out in the open, one can actually feel the mist, etc. My shadow is in the center of what appears to be a rainbow surrounded by a supernumerary bow. http://picasaweb.google.com/JimmyRay.AstroPix/Astro_Pix# Thank you, Jimmy Ray -----Original Message----- From: sac-forum-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:sac-forum-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Tom Polakis Sent: Saturday, February 06, 2010 9:48 AM To: sac-forum@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [sac-forum] Re: Puzzling Phenomenon I answered Howard's query over on the EVAC mailing list, but failed to copy the SAC list. The explanation for it and pretty much any other lighting phenomenon is on Les Cowley's Atmospheric Optics site. It's called the opposition effect. http://www.atoptics.co.uk/atoptics/oppim1.htm I don't think the bright spot Howard saw requires the presence of the airplane or an atmosphere. It is caused only by a lack of shadows. Tom
