Here is an image I took one morning while flying my ultralight around some 
clouds (see "me on cloud"). This was as about 7500 feet agl  and right against 
the edge of the cloud itself. The dark lines in the image are the "Flying 
wires" that brace the wing. As the pilot sits right out in the open, one can 
actually feel the mist, etc. My shadow is in the center of what appears to be a 
rainbow surrounded by a supernumerary bow.

I answered Howard's query over on the EVAC mailing list, but failed to copy the 
SAC list.  The explanation for it and pretty much any other lighting phenomenon 
is on Les Cowley's Atmospheric Optics site.  It's called the opposition effect.

I don't think the bright spot Howard saw requires the presence of the airplane 
or an atmosphere.  It is caused only by a lack of shadows.
