I answered Howard's query over on the EVAC mailing list, but failed to copy the SAC list. The explanation for it and pretty much any other lighting phenomenon is on Les Cowley's Atmospheric Optics site. It's called the opposition effect. http://www.atoptics.co.uk/atoptics/oppim1.htm I don't think the bright spot Howard saw requires the presence of the airplane or an atmosphere. It is caused only by a lack of shadows. Tom
