I have not investigated combinations of batteries. I don't think the exact voltage is important. Anyway, I am in no rush. I located the flash unit because someone asked about the capacitor.

On 2/5/2020 2:59 PM, John Wild wrote:

Because of the cost of original type of flash batteries,  I have used A23 12v batteries.

One is used for the 11.5v and two in series for the 22v batteries. A bit DIY fiddling puts the contacts of the battery in the correct place for the flash contacts.

Both new battery compilations work fine and the bulbs fire well.

The test lamp is just to check that the flash bulb will work when required. It does nothing in firing the flash bulb, only testing its ability to fire. It's brightness is important in that if to high, it will drain the battery very quickly.

Later flash bulbs had a blue dot to show the bulb would work but originally bulbs did not have that dot so the test light was important. The blue dot is not a total guarantee but it does work most of the time.

Oxidation of unused contacts will prevent reliable firing of bulbs. I do not think the type of capacitor used is one which will deteriorate in normal circumstances but I may be proved wrong. I have found bulb ignition failure tends to be poor contacts.

Thank you Carlos. The lamp does slip under a spring clip. I
have to trace out the circuit to see exactly where the lamp is.
The specifications in both instruction books is for a lamp with
somewhat unusual specs. Most 6.3 volt pilot lamps draw more than
60mA by two to four times. I have somewhere a long list of most
types of miniature lamps. Have not found it yet, its in an
engineering handbook. The flash gun probably works fine without
the lamp. I may get this thing working in the future, the main
problem is that the battery is expensive. I have a lot of flash
bulbs, bought them when I saw them, but who knows if they are
still good.
Osram is a European brand, I think it was associated with
General Electric. They also made radio tubes and household and
auto lamps.
