To confuse the issue, the term "component" is rarely encountered. Such items are much more commonly referred to as groups, while "element" is often referred to as simply a "lens". Thus, a given lens would be described as being "7l/3g", meaning seven lenses in three groups. Kingslake and Smith seem to use element and group, while Europeans use lens and group.
