Here's how my position shapes up. My church (St. Luke's Lutheran in Federal Way, WA) pays me $5200 anually. We have four services each weekend, only one of which is traditional (using the organ). I play piano for two of the other three services which are all contemporary. I'm also the accompanist for the choir, which sings chiefly at the traditional service about 18 times a year. Of course they sing more often prior to Easter and Christmas. We probably learn 15-20 new anthems each year and the rest are recycled from previous seasons. The choir rehearses each Thursday, September through May, 7:30 to 9 p.m. Once or twice a year, the choir is part of concerts showcasing all the musical groups in our church, and one community Christmas concert with four other churches. Now all that could change here shortly, because our music director of the last 10 years just retired, and we have a new Minister of Worship and Arts coming in. He may have some different ideas about the choir and the services. When a substitute organist comes in, he or she is paid $75 for the one service, practice time, and accompanying soloists and small ensembles. I am blessed to have six organists of varying levels of expertise available to me when I'm gone on a Sunday. No complaints there.
