Hi Kim,

As far as GPS programs are concerned in my opinion MotionX GPS Drive is the
most accessible one at the moment and if they are still running the deal I
believe you can try it out with voice guidance for 99 cents for the first
month and then decide if you want to continue by subscribing for a month at
a time or for an entire year. You can also buy additional voices if you
wish at a very reasonable price of just 99 cents each. They are all quite
good.

I also have Navigon which also worked quite well up until this latest
update. I've kept the app and Navigon has said they intend to fix the
problems but we will have to wait and see. The new version doesn't seem to
work well on older model iOS devices especially when using Voice Over.
There are a few problems with it on the 4S as well. If you don't already
own it I would hold off for now.

I also own TomTom for iOS devices but honestly have never fallen in love
with it. I should spend more time with it but it just doesn't seem all that
intuitive to me.

None of the above programs will provide the same level of information as the
dedicated apps for the blind but they will provide turn by turn directions
and MotionX and Navigon do provide both driving and walking modes and I am
pretty sure TomTom does as well. If MotionX GPS Drive is still offering the
deal I don't think you could go wrong for 99 cents and if you don't like it
in 30 days it will still work as a free app but without the voice guidance.
Right now it is my favorite.

Try VizWiz and Prizmo for scanning. VizWiz is an app that allows you to
take a picture and include an audio question and send it off for someone to
contact you back with a description or answer to your question such as what
color is this sweater. Prizmo is for scanning documents and there are
alternatives. Though you may get some good results the general feeling is
that none of them are really quite as good as we would like.

Thanks,
Jim

Well folks I got my Iphone 4S on Friday, and I couldn't be happier! The only
question I have now is. . . What took me so long??? This phone is amazing!
And siri--wow!!!

A couple of questions:

1. What is the name of the program that acts like a scanner?

2. What is the name of the money identifier program?

3. What are your fvorite GPS programs?

4. For those of you who deal in foreign languages, what are some accessible
translation programs for, say, translating between English and Spanish?

The 4S is a little faster than the 4. When my 4 comes back after exactly 10
seconds it says screen curtain on and the speaker phone won't work, the call
is just on the ear piece. By the next call everything is fine.

it happens within the first couple seconds. you say hello, the other person
gets in hi, its so and so, then it happens. I hear VO say the persons name,
or number if not in contacts, then says 0 2 with i think a double tap sound
, then silence for a few more seconds, then the person is back. i would say
its more like five or six seconds. never bothered to actually count. btw,
i've only had it happen on an incoming call.
