Jessica, no worries. If you do write a console screen reader then I will
package it for Slint and allow to choose it adapting this script:
http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint-14.2.1/source/slint-misc/slint-misc/usr/sbin/speak-with
as I try to make all options available to blind users.
Then I suggest that you use the same default key bindings as speakup for screen
review, so users won't have to learn new ones.

I really just don't like fenrir. I like espeakup using speakup.
Maybe its just I grew up on linux using speakup. I don't know what it is.
What concerns me is one day. One of the readers may not work and I will be
limited to using brailletty. Not a huge loss really. But I used speech
synthesis all my life.
I game with speech. I never tried with a braille display. I am guessing it
would be a bit slow.
In any case. The whole thing about the linux world and bsd too is for people
to write code. Everyone should have the opportunity to do that if they so
desire.
Really. I will tell you this though if I ever do write my own screen reader.
I will maintain it.
As for me contributing with fenrir. Not a bad idea. But I have tried fenrir
over the years since someone told me about it. And it just keeps getting
removed from whatever computer I am using.
Nothing wrong with it. As far as I can tell. It and I don't click.
I have another screen reader sitting in my build directory put out by the
same person that put out edbrowse originally.
I might look at it. But reading the docs it was going over my head. So that
is another project that will have to wait too. I hope not forever because I
would really like to try it.

Please, Jessica, don't write your own screen reader.
I say this as the maintainer of a distribution that gives the choice between
espeakup, speechd-up ans fenrir out of the box (unfortunately only for
x86_64, sorry).
We don't need a fourth console screen reader, me think.
If you don't like fenrir, why not report the issues you have with it upstream?
Even better, why not use your skills and time to help enhance it?
I am pretty sure that this help would be appreciated by Chrys and Storm,
who both just lack the time need to work on several projects in parallel as
fast as they would like to.
As an aside, blacklisting a sound card should not be necessary,
there are means to set the one to be used by a given application.
