Hi, so I run my pi devices headless, no speech at all internally. I ssh in to
them remotely and use my regular voice over and Mac as the head end device.
Now with my devices I’m running phone systems so all their control is done via
the web browser or in the shell. You’re doing something very different of
course using your pi as a terminal / computer more than server like I am. So
doing different stuff.
Sound cards that are USB devices can be had very inexpensively if
pennies are tight. I think on the order of under $20.
Think it’s excellent you’re learning linux / unix and some of the stuff
under the hood. Very valuable skills especially in the job hunt. Good luck

Are you using an external sound card with your pie for the voice?
It’s generallybest d=to do this because it has a better performance profile
for the external sound card rendering the speech. Just a suggestion.

About fenrir. I could not get the package in raspbian to work at all.
experimental code. Both worked. However.
I had the same issue on debian when I tried installing it there as well.
So on raspbian I decided to find the homepage and get the stable and
speech but the lag was conparable to just finishing to listen to the stuff
The speech was really scratchy. And yes I could press control to silence
being read to me using espeakup.
I am keeping the fenrir experimental version on here and testing it as I go.
So in brief. I don't know what I am going to do.
And it sounds like two espeaks are running or something.
Maybe I can change a setting or something that will help with the speech.
The speech is really static sounding.

The problem is I can't seem to get the wifi adapters running under there.
I do want to play around with freebsd.
So currently I need to connect via ethernet to ssh into it.
They tell me they can't or won't drill a hole to run a network ethernet cable.
The problem is. I live upstairs and the router is downstairs.
