[racattack] Re: RACAttack on steroids (how to speed up deployment) We need volunteers for implementation

Hi again,

the installation flow is:
- create node 1 and configure it
- create shared disks
- clone node 1 to 2 and check if udev rules still work
- configure node 2 to work correctly (network, dns).

IMHO things would be easier if we stop _before_ the creation of shared disks,
or we'll have to deal with them: just 1 VM to distribute vs 2 VMs and 4 shared
disks.

cheers

Oggetto: [racattack] Re: RACAttack on steroids (how to speed up deployment) We

Hi All,

Yes this is what I thought about. Install OS and configure as much as we can
(is reasonable) based on RACAttack 12c
instructions<https://www.google.dk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CCoQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikibooks.org%2Fwiki%2FRAC_Attack_-_Oracle_Cluster_Database_at_Home%2FRAC_Attack_12c&ei=_vPcUvnBKfLc4QSxtIGABA&usg=AFQjCNFHcPjFBDdwOuhzvmQYUDfcfyy9qA&bvm=bv.59568121,d.bGE>.

This would allow participants to safe setup time. How much we would like to
pre-configure is in our hands. As far as I see now there are several possible
levels.
-a- configure First host only to the point right before cloning to the second
host
# This way we simplify the distribution. We just need one VDI file to be
distributed.
-b- configure two nodes
# 2 files to distribute
-c- configure two nodes and create shared storage drives
# 2 + 4 files to distribute.

PS
-- Logistic shouldn't be a problem as we can provide the files over USB sticks
(GNU licence allows it).
-- As of now RACAttack doesn't have ASMLib included. However nothing stopping
us from creating an additional option :)

Hi Team,

I don't want to hijack the thread just want to through an additional idea.
While scripting could speed up the setup it will require some development
efforts + portability to other platforms.

On the other hand as VBox and OLinux are opened (GNU) products nothing stopping
us to create VDI disk with OS pre-installed and RAC setup done. We publish it
on the net and pass it to participants via USB (we can do it as those are GNU).
The only thing that participants will need to do is to go through VBOX VM hosts
setup. This is where VBOX scripts could be handy :)

If we combine those two methods the setup (for those who want) could be
significantly faster :)

NOW WE NEED A VOLUNTEERS who would be willing to configure VM VDI files as
close to RAC install as possible (exactly following existing 12c RAC Attack
instructions), test the VDI with other volunteer and publish it to public along
with instructions how to use it.

PS: BTW Bjoern as far as I know *I may be wrong* Windows version of VirtualBox
is slightly different. On couple of occasions I didn't find commands available
on on other platforms).

What do you think about the idea?

Hi Guys,

I'm using VBoxManage in my scripts - I can do it more portable to other OS-es
but I don't have a Mac. So I can do Windows / Linux but someone has to do Mac.

Do we have a common github for scripts like for a book ?

Marcin

I think so. VirtualBox comes with a commandline interface called VBoxManage.
The subcommands used to control the VMs are the same on all host platforms (as
far as I know). Of course, some of the paths (where to put the virtual disks)
and device names might be different. This could be solved by making those parts
configurable.
