My first enlarger was the Federal that my dad bought right after coming home
from WW II. It was in a box in the attic with some funny glass and black
bakelite things and some strange smelling packets or chems. I was 11 or 12
when I asked my dad what it was. When he told me I asked if I could use them
because he hadn't for a decade by that time. He pulled out a few old books
from the same box and said, "Read these and I will ask you a few questions when
you are done. If you give the right answers, the box is all yours!" Then
Dejur and then Omega.

PS The Solar dates back to when I also had an Argus C3 camera - mid to late
1950s.

Found, or replaced by? Actually in 1968 I was working with an IBM 360 but the
bundle of checks (from the bank I used for my first job) was on a shelf under a
pile of European maps. Where else would they be stashed? I still have the
medium format Omega. First 4x5 was a deJur Versatile Professional circa mid
1940s. First 5x7 was a Solar. Those two were replaced by an Omega E. There is
also a Durst Laborator SM 183 lurking in another room. It's all fun, right?
