Twenty years ago, I took that "build your own stuff" to it's extreme! I
bought an old warehouse, stripped it down to the structure, and built my
studio, darkrooms, and apartment upstairs (it didn't have an upstairs!).
When I closed the studio five years ago, I sold off the studio stuff.
And now the building is under contract for sale. I hate the thought of
moving my enlargers and processors from IN to PA, but it's going to
happen- probably by August.

My first enlarger was one I built myself out of a 2/14x31/4, folding, roll filmThat's outstanding. Early in my photographic career I learned that
camera. Added a light housing and mounted on inclined and slotted wooden stand.
Film carrier was rudimentary. The camera lens was the enlarging lens. Here is
a small image which I hope is OK with list rules. I used this for several years
while working for my high school magazine and yearbook. Later got a Leica Valoy
and later yet a Focomat 1C. I still have these two. In fact I have 3 Valoys ...
use them for improvising other things! The Focomat 1C is my favorite even
though I also was given a Focomat V35 which I don't use.

"real" photographers build a lot of their own stuff - sets, props,
darkrooms, etc.
