I shouldn't have said I "knew" he tested it with D76, I should have said I was told by someone who said they knew. But this is the internet and who knows what is true. I have on pretty good authority that Kodak considers D76 the standard to judge tests by. My own experience with at least the older version of T-Max 400 is that T-Max RS developer produces somewhat coarser grain than D-76 1:1. I have not used Xtol because I had two failures with it before ever having a chance to actually develop any film. According to Kodak's sensitometric curves T-Max RS will also produce somewhat higher maximum densities but the maximum from D-76 is already beyond the normal printable range. T-Max RS should also deliver somewhat greater speed. Shooting at about 80% of box speed should push the exposure up the curve enough to insure good shadow detail, I think at EI-250 one may get somewhat dense negatives. According to the Kodak literature a correctly developed T-max 400 negative should look a bit thin. Remember, exposure determines overall density, development determines contrast.
