I have a relatively new darkroom - 3 years old. The
darkroom is in the basement, and we are on a septic
system, with the inlet to the septic tank above the
level of the darkroom. To get the waste water out of
the darkroom, the sink drains into a 'laundry tray
system' which is essentially a box with a sump pump in
it.

Recently, the pump stopped working - and it turns out
that the problem is with the float switch - a
replacement is on order. The thing that has me
wondering is the fact that when I opened up the
Laundry Tray system, I noticed a lot more corrosion on
the metal parts of the pump than I would have
expected. My darkroom effluent is probably pretty
typical - 99% of it is wash water - I do not send fix
or toners down the drain, I do send my spent
developers and stop bath down the drain, but I would
have thought that they would be diluted enough not to
contribute to the corrosion.

Has anybody else run into anything like this?

Hi Mark !
I'm almost at the end of my brand new darkroom construction.
My sewer system is about 1.5 m ABOVE the sink drain. So I had to use a sump pump.
When I looked for it, I was told by ALL manufacturers that acidic or basic effluents are a deadly poison for this kind of pump.
I was told (and did, indeed) to buy a sump pump for emptying pools or contaminated harsh water. The mettallic parts are in stainless steel but a special one to resist such agressive waters. And more importantly, I was told to let the pump sit in pure water after flushing harsh water, I.E. let the water run for awhile after pouring the chems.
The manufacturer who make laundry/toilet sump pump in a nice efficient box even told me that their aparatus will die in a coupple of runs if submitted to this ! (reading the manual, I've seen that they forbid the use of clorine bleach to clean the toilet, to say the less. this will void the waranty). They told me that the gaskets are dissolved in acidic water....
Hope this helps !
