I have a borrowed Pentax 6x7 that exhibited a similar problem.  My best *guess* 
was/is that it was a light leak caused by deteriorated seals around the film 
"door".  The sealing materials was, in fact, gummy.

I have now replaced all the seals, but have not yet tested the result in bright 
sunlight.   …so I can't say this *was* the problem.  The seals were clearly 
bad, though.

Aside from inspecting the seals around the door, your student might see what 
happens if she tapes over all seams with black electrical tape.
