If the marks go from edge to edge of the film then it can not be a shutter problem but must be a light leak of some kind in my opinion. The distance between marks (whether fixed or variable) might provide a clue. As well as her handling of the camera as someone suggested - meaning time that the film might have been still ... I am also assuming that the bands are not exactly the same density. If they are the same density (like D-max) then that is a clue for some possibilities. If they vary in density that is a clue for others. Is one side of the dark band darker than the other? Once I had a student lose a screw that happened to go right through the body into the film chamber ... this caused artifacts ... don't remember what it was anymore but the culprit was the missing screw.
