I have used eBay just once. I ordered a manual from someone who offers reprints. I did not bid on it but used the "buy now" option. At the same time I began to set up a Pay Pal account but never finished setting it up because I found the seller would simply charge a credit card. Ever since this transaction I've received tons of fisching letters perporting to come from eBay or Pay Pal. I've blocked some of them but I still get some. Some look quite authentic but others have obvious spelling and grammatical errors that are a tip off. Of course, I never answer any of them. Evidently, eBay does not do a very good job of protecting private information sent to them.
Happy Hollidays to one and all.

Something I strongly suggest is to contact your ISP and see if they will give you a few 'throwaway' email addresses that are forwarded to your main account. Use one of the throwaways until it starts getting spammed, then cancel it and move to the next throwaway address.

For those who have a very cooperative ISP, or own their own mail server, try creating an email address for every new use on the Net. ie If I go to ABC Widget and order something, I will first create a new email address of abcwidget@xxxxxxxxx (one of my domains)(this new address just forwards to my 'real' account) and use that for any correspondance. If later it gets spammed, I just delete it.

I never give out my 'real' account name to anyone, including family. Why? People will fall victim to worms, Trojans, viruses, etc. and their Address Book may get scooped up. Then your 'real' address is public and on the spam lists.

It's nothing personal - just living on the Net in 2006.
