Dennis,

Might it be a film that has a base with texture that 'allows' for retouching on
the 'back' like some of the Kodak 'professional' films?

Dennis,

That's quite 'normal' for nearly any film processed in a pyro/ staining developer.

I can just about guarantee that you will not see what you are observing to have a deleterious effect when enlarged to a print. It is NOT similar to the obvious 'clumping' that one will normally see with reticulation of the emulsion due to temperature 'shock'.

Just as a Carbon print can 'show' extremely fine physical relief from an oblique angle, a pyrogallol or pyrocatechin developer will produce a similar 'physical effect' on the film
emulsion due to 'hardening' of the gelatin by the tanning.

Yes I am aware of the relief of the image and the emulsion looks great on this film, the problem is on the base.
