This is rather off-topic for the list for which I apologize. However, my
central point still stands in that IMO good writing from which one can
ascertain what's important and the tone of the writer is at a premium on the
Internet these days.

I agree with that.

That is a very prejudice remark! For sighted people the appearance of the
page is very important! It can make the page easier to read, point out
different areas, emphasize certain sections and more. Graphics on the page
can also be important. It would be like saying you as a blind person should
only use a limited, crappy voice for your synthesizer and forget braille!
Yes most of those eye candy is lost on us and converting to text for us
usually does not lose any more information than we already lose.

For the record, I use it while converting some files -- I do it both ways.
But given my druthers, I'd rather *everything* were in .TXT format and the
sighted would actually read as opposed to depending upon their eye-candy
(including typefaces) to spoon-feed them as to what's important! (grin)

But why convert in the first place? For instance, if I have some perfectly
readable and accessible PDF, why convert it to text when Adobe reader keeps
your place and notepad doesn't? I don't understand the reasoning behind
blind individuals wanting everything in text format. I don't. Given a word
document, keep a word document, given a PDF, keep it as a PDF.

Maybe. You can try having him use calibre to convert the books to a format
that isn't DRM protected, but if you don't' want to convert, for some
strange reason that I still don't' understand, then, not sure what to tell
you.

Take care,
Sina

Well it also helps that my friend happens to own an iPOD, and I don't, so he
was wondering for me if there was an accessible way to read those books on
my PC. That's what he was getting at.

I think he was saying he wants to read the book Sina not convert it. For
example the Braille+ opens them and reads them but doesn't convert them to
any other format.

You know, my friend was telling me about those types of books, and he was
wondering if there's a way to read them in their native format (for I prefer
keeping documents in their original format when possible), on a PC
accessibly. Is Edsharp's conversion feature there because there simply
isn't a way since Epub's an iPOD format? Or is it?

Hi John,
I do not know much about this area, myself, but someone shared the following
info:

The EPub which the Calibre library supports is probably version 2.
Things are going to be quite different under EPub 3, which is slated to
become the distribution format endorsed by the Daisy Consortium some time
next year. Information about the draft version of EPub
3 is available on the web page of the International Digital Publishing
Forum,

Jamal,

liblouis and liblouisxml or liblouisutdml will provide not only
Braille translation but als formatting according to specifications in

for

epub.

The programs themselves are designed to help in making this file.

If you can point me to a good epub document I can make it.

I hear that Daisy 5 is basically epub. Is this true?

Thanks,
John

EPUB is increasingly competing with PDF as a format in which
publishers distribute ebooks. I found a good converter from EBUB to
plain text in the "calibre" software available at
http://calibre-ebook.com/

It is part of a large download that includes many ebook management
features. Due to its size, I have not bundled it with EdSharp like
other command-line converters. Instead, I have included an option at
the end of the EdSharp installation process, which lets one download
and install the latest calibre version for Windows. That checkbox is
off by default. If one checks that option, I recommend accepting the
default directory suggested by the installer, which isc:\program
c:\program
Files\Calibre2

If that is done, then the Open Other Format command of EdSharp,
Control+Shift+O, will convert a file from .epub to .txt format.
Control+Shift+Also,
the Text Convert command, Control+T, should be able to batch convert
a list of .epub files.

If you have an existing installation of EdSharp, you can get the
update via the Elevate command, F11. Otherwise, you can install from
http://EmpowermentZone.com/edsetup.exe
