Re: [PCWorks] Where can you ACTUALLY DOWNLOAD RealPlayer?

That's why I use MPC because it's so clean, light, and
stealthy. It doesn't even need to be installed. BTW, MPC is
not the M$ 6.4 version, it's a tweaked 6.4 version done by
"Gabest". It will play far more file types than the basic M$
version (including FLV, DivX, and now Real Media formats). I
don't think the Gabest people mess with it anymore, I believe
another place has taken the project and now have the updates
for it.

It's even worse than taking over file associations. When I
finally got MPC to play the Real Media files, the real M$ WMP
XP version pulled its 'stunt' once again and tried to totally
take over all video files. I couldn't click a video file
without that POS putting up the "Setup Media Player" BS. This
was after I had already deleted "wmplayer.exe" and
"setup_wm.exe" files. I then remembered that those files also
have to be deleted from the dllcache folder in order to finally
rid yourself of its obnoxious intrusive behavior.

I still had a problem with MPC playing .ram files. I would
even right click and "Open with...", and MPC was not only not
in the list, but even after browsing to its folder and
SELECTING it, it still would not show up in the Programs list
to play the file! I had to drag the .ram files to MPC to play
them! So I had to go into the Registry to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mplayerc.ram\shell\open\command

("mplayerc" is MPC), and at the right pane put the path to the
location of MPC in order to be able to simply click the .ram
files and have MPC play them. It still had the path of XP's
default WMP there. So if anyone has problems getting their
media player to play certain files, check the keys for the file
extensions in that Registry area and make sure the path is
correct.

Ugh, I despise QuickTime/iTunes and WMP, all plagued with DRM.
And,
pretty much all programs want to take over file associations
now. MS
wanted to lock down all associations in windows 7 to MS
defaults but
they thought otherwise. Eventually ;)

I use eMusic for music downloads, Winamp for audio playback,
Exact Audio
Copy or EAC for ripping, and DivX for video playback. Each is
free and
play pretty much every format available.

However, whenever I want an audio stream from CBC I have to use
Real
Alternative but that has been quite awhile since many streams
end up on
Youtube now. Eventually they do.
