I don't use Office much at all (I'm running 2003 and can count on my two 
hands how many times I've used Word), so I'm no expert on any of this.  But 
I have to wonder if you couldn't just remove the link, save the file and 
then recreate the link to get rid of the extra baggage the first one 
includes.
