Select where it says SHOW DESKTOP ITEMS. Selecting it should uncheck it,
thereby hiding your icons!

Do you start out with 'active desktop' first? After that I get 'customize
desktop', 'new desktop irem', 'show web content' "show desktop icons' 'lock
desktop items' and a couple of other things.
But you have XP, so maybe it's different (?) ~Glo

Glo, I dont see that. when I right click on the desktop I see, arrange
iconsn by, refresh, paste, new, and properties
