Mike,
     I thought of that, but I don't have a set of headphones. Grrr. I have 
another set of speakers somewhere in one of the remaining unpacked boxes. When 
I 
find them, I'll try that. And also will try these speakers on my laptop.
     If I'm following you and GMan's thoughts, what we're trying to do is 
isolate the problem to software/hardware, as well as sound board/ speakers. 
Correct me if I'm incorrect.
     I read the page link over again a couple times, and it sure seems like 
I've done everything that addressed this problem. I've also run the HP 
troubleshooting thing.  This is so frustrating.
     I probably won't get to this for a couple days - the carpet is supposed 
to be installed tomorrow. We'll see about that.
