Sorry, I forgot to mention it is Win98. The whole filename is *read* by
Explorer but it wont be renamed into something shorter. I can bring the
context menu up, that's the problem

Explorer.  I seem to remember there is a limit to all Windows file
names.....something like 256 letters, but don't quote me.
