AntiVirus scans can be very time consuming depending on how many files 
and folders and drives you have it scan.

If you have a "real time" monitor running to catch anything as it 
comes off the internet or from a borrowed disc or flash drive then the 
scans could be a bit further apart than daily.  Also, if you are very 
careful about where you go on the internet and what email you open 
then you could space them even further apart.

Key factors are how paranoid you are and how careful or careless you 
and the other users are.  So is the various other layers of security 
you employ (anti-spam, firewall, anti-adware etc).
