Windows, including Win3.x, has always supported auto-insert, which is basically just a media-change signal from the drive electronics. A rudimentary auto-run feature was included that allowed Windows to play CDs automatically. (I still prefer drives that have an extra button so that I don't need to waste CD time on something that the CD drive is perfectly capable of doing itself). In Win95, auto-run was extended to look for an autorun.inf in the root of the CD, and to execute it. This is what allows a setup program to start running automatically from the CD. In WinXP, it was extended again, so that you can specify what action occurs when a specific type of CD is inserted. Auto-insert notification and auto-run can be controlled independently, but disabling auto-insert will likely make you think that auto-run is disabled. However, if you double-click on the drive in My Computer, you'll see that the action still occurs, unless you turn off auto-run. --Scott.
