It's easy in the Army -- anyone who somehow manages to get any on
their system in spite of the various protections against it loses
their computer, login access, and data. An excellent incentive for
getting a clue. :)

Right now, I've been seeing a bunch of lightning-related problems,
more than I've ever seen before -- been lots of storms passing over
Texas for the last couple of weeks.

For those of you who do NOT leave your computers on all the time like
I do, it's important to be sure to turn off your monitor, printer,
cable/DSL modem, etc., at the power strip, or unplug the power strip
entirely, when a storm is approaching.

For the computer, turning it off from the button on the front of the
case, or letting Windows turn it off, is NOT sufficient. You must turn
the computer off using the switch on the BACK of the computer (if you
have one), or by turning off or unplugging the power strip. The reason
for the distinction is that Windows, and the button on the front, do a
SOFT power-off, in which power continues to run through the system so
that it can detect the button-press. The switch on the back physically
cuts off the power.

Note also that phone lines are a "popular" way for computers to get
fried, so unplug them also, and you should probably do the same for
the network or USB cable between the computer and cable modem (the TV
cable is not easy to disconnect from the cable modem), even though I
haven't heard of any cable modems getting fried by lightning.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
