Hi Ming, When you click on the advanced button a box should come up that says "Advanced Troubleshooting Settings" at the top. The "Disable Fast Shutdown" checkbox is about the tenth one down. This is the way it is on my Win98SE installation. If you don't have a checkbox for this, then maybe you don't have fast shutdown on your system. There is another method for correcting this problem in the Windows Knowledge Base. You can get to it by clicking start>windows update>support>knowledge base. In "Search The Knowledge Base" type in "Windows 98 Shutdown". Scroll down the results to "Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement" click that and scroll to "Download Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement". Download and install the supplement if it does not install itself. I hope this fixes your problem. gcox ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ming Moodrey" <mingm@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <pchelpers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, July 13, 2003 11:42 PM Subject: [pchelpers] Re: Slow Computer Won't Shut Down I got as far as "advanced" and then another table flags up but does not provide a check box for "disable fast shutdown". What am I doing wrong? Thanks. I noted that there is a greater chance of it shutting down properly when I exit from all the programs that I opened before shutting the computer down. Has it been told to REstart or to Start. Sometimes we have told it to restart after installing something new and it needs to shut down and restart to complete the installation. Hope the solution for that problem is this easily solved. I can't get the computer to actually shut down when I choose that option from the shutdown menu. It just keeps re-booting. I know this is a common problem with win98 but since it never happened to me before I wasn't paying attention when it was discussed before. This started happening after I upgraded my ram from 96MB to 320MB. 2. I have found that my computer hasn't gained any speed. In fact it seems to have slowed down! Has anyone ever heard of a pc slowing down when more ram was added? My apps are taking up to three seconds to start loading when I launch them. This hesitation was not there before. They are loading at a little less speed than before. I'm running a VIA Cyrix 3 550MHz cpu with 320MB of ram under Win98SE. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
