You got some replies already, so this may be redundant.

Temp files and programs take up space on the hard drive. Hard drive
usage generally has little effect upon resources. It's only when the
programs are actually RUNNING and files are actually OPEN that they
have any effect upon resources.

INCREASING the swap file may help a bit.

What OS are you using? Resource problems in Win95/98/ME are very
different than in WinNT/2K/XP/03.

If you're using one of the latter group, press Ctrl-Shift-ESC to get
the Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab. Look in the CPU and Mem
Usage columns. The CPU column should be all zeroes or close to it,
except for Idle, unless you have something CPU-intensive running. You
can also look on the Performance and Networking tabs, if you have
them.

You can also click Start -> Run and type MSCONFIG and if it runs, look
on the Startup tab for stuff that you don't use constantly and/or
don't need. Some things like virus scanners you'll want to leave in.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
