Yes we flew up there before. I have flown my Radian up there. Near the
turnaround at the north end of that dead end.

There is also the unused street up by the Poulsbo Office Depot. Has curbs but
ok for take off I would think. No good landing spot.

Subject: [orcachat] Re: Lifting contest
I think I'd prefer our field to the fair grounds. I remember checking them out
one day when we were looking for field alternatives, and I didn't think it was
very suitable.
I've purchased 4'x200' of weed control fabric and a box of 500 staples. It
won't be the geotex runway we were considering, but it should help quite a bit
for our project. I'll wait until we're ready to start flying with ballast to
put it down. It won't last forever, but it should last long enough for the
contest. If people in the club want to use it, we can put it down the middle
of the runway. If the consensus is to preserve the middle as grass, we can put
it more to the side. I'd be willing to buy another roll if club members want
it to be wider. I figure 4 ft is wide enough for takeoff, but not for landing.
If the weed control fabric is too slick for good steering in a crosswind, we
might be able to treat it to improve traction. When I built apparatus for a
dog agility course, I made it nonskid by using an old boat-builder's trick. I
painted it with oil-based polyurethane and sprinkled sugar all over it. Once
it dries, the sugar was rinsed off and the pits from the grains make a nice
nonskid surface. Just leaving the sugar in place until the rain does its thing
would also make it nonskid.

Tom

A few years ago we flew at the Kitsap Fair grounds, north of the pavilion in
what is called the Lower Bowl. The Gordon Field 2 might also be usable. I’ll
swing by in a day or two and check it out. Maybe we could use the Apex
private airstrip, west of Silverdale. Also, a call to Rick Walsh might help in
where he used to fly paragliders from. Rick From: Thomas Condon Sent: Tuesday,

Kitsap ARCS used to use the back runway in Bremerton for RC flying. They
shared it with the dragster folks, since it is never used as a runway (due to
prevalent winds). I don't know if they still do, but there is an asphalt
runway that isn't normally used you can check out. Tom Condon

In this case, I'm more concerned with takeoff than landing. I don't think we
can get a heavily loaded Mini-Apprentice to take off on our grass runway. It
is hard enough as it is to get the plane to roll at its light weight. I'm also
concerned that, even with the east alders removed, we won't have a clear path
to depart after takeoff. But rolling is the biggest problem.
I see two solutions. One is to go to another venue to make the loaded flights.
I've not been to the Chimicum field, yet, but while I've heard it is windy
there, they may have a smoother runway and more open flying area. There are
probably other fields in the area that have paved or geotextile surfaces.
The other solution is to put down a smoother surface on our runway. We decided
not to go with a geotextile surface because of the cost, but I am going to look
at Home Depot to see what they might have in way of a cheaper alternative. We
don't need something that will last, and we don't need it to be wide enough to
land on. It just needs to be something we can put down for loaded takeoffs and
then pack up at the end of the day.
Cheers,
Tom
