One provides a news and information service necessary for a democracy, free
of charge (ad supported). While the other charges VERY handsome monthly fees
from every user.
At least you added (ad supported). Those ads add up to more than $67 billion
this year. And retrans consent added another $5+ billion in 2015.
There are many news and information services that cover our representative
republic. Sadly almost all characterize our government as a Democracy, which is
pretty much what it has become. But TV has a special place as "the political
action committee" for politicians of all stripes. The payoff this year may
exceed $3 billion in campaign ads.
My point is that cable companies get a sweet deal too. They install the
equipment they need pretty much wherever it needs to go, without compensating
people. In fairness, they do try to intrude only on users of the system, when
it comes to plunking down their big cabinets. But more than once, either Cox
or Verizon has had to dig up my yard to get their new or updated cables
through. The last time it was for FiOS. It's not they asked, right? They did
it, because it was convenient for their revenue making scheme.
I believe you are mistaken, or at least you fail to understand that almost all
of us that own homes have deeds that provide utility right of ways to local
governments. And these governments, and the utilities they own, do receive
compensation from the cable and FTTH systems.
Craig, content is the biggest cost for the MVPDs. I repeat: it makes no
difference if it's their own content or someone else's. It's still the
biggest expense they have.
You are wrong. It is a major cost, but may not be the largest cost, for
SUBSCRIBERS, depending on the services they are paying for. Other than the
content they produce, MVPDs do not share in the subscriber fees. They DO
generate revenues by selling ads.
It is not a classic expense, as it is passed through to the content owners,
just like all of the taxes on the service.
No, you don't. The TV networks may not be able to fund as lavish productions
as they do now, and as high salaries per episode per actor, without their
MVPD dual revenue streams. That does not mean that the industry would
disappear. It means the industry will readjust. I say "will," because the
future is not 100% of households on legacy MVPDs, certainly, but nor is it
100% of households on SVOD sites. So, they have to adjust.
Yes. The industry has re-adjusted...
To two revenue streams.
Maybe you should, but it wouldn't do much good. Let me repeat: net neutrality
applies to the ISP. It does not apply to the owner of content, and it does
not apply to the CE manufacturer. If the owner of content decides to only
stream to PCs, that's entirely his choice. And equally, if the owner of
content decides to get in bed with, say, Apple, but not to get in bed with
Roku, those limited-use-boxes-born-out-of-collusion would not have any
neutrality mandates placed on them either.
Thank you for FINALLY stating clearly why Net Neutrality is irrelevant to this
discussion. It ALWAYS has been.
We're lucky to have Title II imposed on the ISPs. Count our blessings.
Meanwhile, there is **NOTHING** preventing CE manufacturers from designing
streaming boxes that are compatible with streams meant for PCs. Nothing. Just
like, the original Surface RT could not receive those streams, while the
original and current Surface Pro can.
Because they are running an OS that the content owners are comfortable with,
and the number of users is SMALL. The mobile market is LARGE and growing, and
the content owners are experimenting with how to maximize revenues from it.
Regards
Craig
