Hell no. I am paying them for this content.
It's called monopoly power, not market power.
If a food store keeps raising its prices, you are free to go to a different
one. Brand name foods will be the same.
They are not the same today; even in stores operated buy the same company. Most
grocery chains have sophisticated pricing algorithms based on the demographics
of the neighborhoods they serve, and the size of the store. And they look at
competitors pricing constantly.
In this particular case, i.e. sports programs on the TV networks, you are
whining about content that you can get for free, by simply going to a
different store. You let yourself be forced to use a "monopoly" pipe, when
there are readily available other pipes for the same content.
Unfortunately, very little sports is still offered by the FOTA networks. THe
NFL and Olympics are the primary franchises they are holding onto. Even here,
some NFL games and much of the Olympic event coverage is moving behind the pay
walls.
Sports is one of the major reasons so many U.S. Homes subscribe to the MVPD
bundles. But not the only reason.
Too late. The Internet has already evolved into a new distribution
medium for TV content. The congloms are about to take an even
bigger share of the profits from their oligopoly as they eliminate
the MVPD middlemen.
In a competitive medium, the congloms can make more money, even while
charging less to the consumer. Makes sense to me. It's all the smaller
channels, those being subsidized by people like you, that will lose out.
Yes Bert. Monty and I addressed this yesterday. This is simply an artifact of
technical evolution, as I have stated MANY times over the past few years. There
is simply no value in rerun channels anymore, now that this content can be
accessed on demand without commercials.
Just as the article Monte posted said. So, to remain consistent in what you
champion, you should be glad to pay the ever-increasing prices. Wear it like
a badge of honor, Craig.
I am finally beginning to see DECREASING prices Bert.
Now that they have raised the price ceiling, the next step is to start offering
better deals. Much of this will take form as bundles that compete with the
MVPDs, like the AT&T deals that tie DirecTV to cellular service.
Regards
Craig
