All of this has to be seen from the greater perspective, IMO. The effects they mention, like fewer writers and consolidation of media companies, all fall under the umbrella of "increased productivity." It means you do more with less. In principle, the outcome is supposed to be an overall increase in the standard of living, in the end. Because this is supposed to lead to a more varied economy, as people not needed in one sector go off and develop whole new sectors. It's been going on since the Industrial Revolution, so it's not like we haven't heard the same complaints over and over again. Of course, when you're the one who has to figure out what "new sector" of the economy you need to create or participate in, it's hardly fun and games.
