Not exactly. I criticize Verizon for selecting to deploy FiOS exclusively, as
their future for providing (how should I put it) fixed rate broadband
service. They chose the most expensive option for their future vision, and
then gave up if that wasn't going to be financially viable. I think they
basically quit at 20% coverage only.
OK
So what should they have deployed, and how much cheaper would that have been,
given their high labor costs?
Keep in mind, pole attachment rates and tearing up streets are agnostic with
respect to coax, twisted pair and fiber. And the cable guys have been deploying
fiber optic trunks for several decades. And the telcos have been deploying
fiber trunks to neighborhood risers to extend the reach of DSL.
The article does point out that Verizon is more interested in wireless, but
as we've discussed before, this type of wireless-for-mobile is not a
reasonable substitute for the cabled variety of broadband, for pricing
reasons. In principle, some form of perhaps fixed-service-only wireless,
priced more like cabled broadband, could be a winner.
The article noted that Verizon was interested in wireless because that is where
the voice customers moved, and they were able to build out their wireless
networks using less expensive contract labor - i.e. Their wireline union
contracts did not apply to wireless.
Data came later, after the introduction of smart phones. Wireline technologies
for data will likely continue to have cost advantages over wireless, if for no
other reason than the high cost of spectrum. But we will reach a point, perhaps
soon, where data networks become fast enough and the caps will disappear, to
make these cost differences less relevant.
Like many people our family is paying for two data services; fixed for home and
wireless as part of our telco bundle. We currently do not come close to using
all of our wireless data allocation; I'm sure we use much more data at home, as
that is where we do more of our consumption, not to mention video streaming.
Some people already rely entirely on wireless data, and in the long run
accessing data anywhere will be expected by the consumer. That is why the cable
industry is massively deploying WiFi to complement their fixed service.
So betting on wireless would appear to make more sense than deploying FIOS.
Why not pursue that option?
As I explained, that appears to be what Verizon IS doing.
In my view, the idea of tying fixed-service-broadband to an archaic MVPD
model from decades past, as the article claims Verizon does, just does not
make a lot of sense. This is the Internet era, not the walled garden cable TV
era. Technology changes, so business models have to as well.
The article went to great lengths to explain why is IS NOT in Verizon's best
interests to tie broadband and MVPD service. Apparently you must have missed
it...

Craig
