Motorola was/is very aware of the poor analog encoding quality with their DCT-6412 STB. The current Phase 3 model has an entirely new MPEG-2 encoder from LSI Logic, replacing the less than stellar Broadcom chip. I should know, I was/am on the team at LSI. We just shipped our 1 millionth chip after only 6 months of production. http://www.lsilogic.com/products/recorder_dvd_dvr_dtr/dmn_8802.html The LSI encoder uses heavy MCTF (motion compensated temporal filtering) to eliminate analog noise before it is encoded. Some users report that the video quality is actually better than a direct connnection of their television receiver to the cable.
