Motorola was/is very aware of the poor analog encoding quality with
their DCT-6412 STB. The current Phase 3 model has an entirely new
MPEG-2 encoder from LSI Logic, replacing the less than stellar
Broadcom chip. I should know, I was/am on the team at LSI. We
just shipped our 1 millionth chip after only 6 months of production.

The LSI encoder uses heavy MCTF (motion compensated temporal
filtering) to eliminate analog noise before it is encoded. Some users
report that the video quality is actually better than a direct connnection
of their television receiver to the cable.
