The super expensive lenses went with the larger (1-inch format, 16-mm diagonal) sensors. >Are larger sensors out of the question because they result >in bulkier cameras? > > No. In fact, they are starting to be used. There are three cameras with 35-mm-movie-frame-sized imagers: the ARRI D20, the Dalsa Origin, and the Panavision Genesis. All use standard 35-mm movie-camera lenses. The Genesis, according to a paper at SMPTE on Friday, is currently being used in seven feature movies. Its imager is 27.5 mm in diagonal (compare to 6 mm for the 1/3-inch camcorders or 11 mm for 2/3-inch) and has 5760 x 2160 sensors on its single imager, with vertical color-stripe filters.
