     Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief
organizations (all have four-star ratings from CharityNavigator.org):

Sorry about missing last week. It just didn't seem worth it, and you didn't
miss much. Air conditioners are replacing TVs in many of the ads. This week
I've combined both weeks' ads except those in the Los Angeles Times, which are
from last week only (my L.A. correspondent is out of town this week). FYI,
I'll be out of town most of July, but I'll do memos when I can.

- Follow-ups:

     - Power consumption of new TVs - Here's a story in the Christian Science
Monitor:
<http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0616/p13s02-stct.html>

     - TV manufacturers removing NTSC tuners to get around the mandate - This
story appeared on Corante.com:
<http://tinyurl.com/csfzb>

     - Sales-help confusion - This Cableworld story covers retailers across the
country:
<http://tinyurl.com/7vs3f>

     - Reliance on broadcast TV - This graphic from a story in The New York
Times yesterday, indicates that about five out of eight Americans got their
local news from TV in 2004, a significant INCREASE over 2001. As there is very
little local news on TV other than broadcast, it means they are relying on
local broadcasters, however they get their signals. And when falling trees
take down cable service and heavy rain wipes out satellite, they can get that
news ONLY via off-air broadcast TV. FYI, online accounted for under 10% of
Americans' local news:

     - July 1 -
          - The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has clarified another
July 1 milestone. In three days, the ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC outlets in the
top-100 markets have to maximize their DTT coverage (go full power). All other
commercial broadcasters have until July 1 of next year:
<http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-05-1636A1.pdf>
     Warren Communications News reported today that many broadcasters pleading
hardship. The story will be on their site until tomorrow morning:
<http://www.warren-news.com/>
          - With three days to go, this week I've listed 133 advertised TVs
36-inch or larger. Of those, 65 (49%) have integrated DTT-reception
capability, the highest proportion to date -- just short of the 50% that were
supposed to be on the market a year ago.
          - See also the ads section for inexpensive non-integrated sets that
are HD and/or widescreen.

     - May 1 -
          - Neither the FCC nor the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB)
updated their lists this week.
          - Doug Lung's RF Report notes 715 licensed U.S. DTT stations in the
FCC CDBS database as of June 19:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dlrf/one.php?id=912>

- The June edition of the NAB's "Destination Digital TV" has come out. It
lists 1508 U.S. DTT stations:
<http://www.nab.org/newsroom/issues/digitaltv/DDTV/0605.pdf>
     The NAB's online list still has just 1497:
<http://www.nab.org/Newsroom/issues/digitaltv/DTVStations.asp>

- Warren Communications News reported Thursday on a battle over DTT
signal-strength rules that's putting proponents in awkward positions.
Broadcasters, who are so concerned about DTT reception that they've started a
receiver project, need to say reception is good to keep the satellite industry
from delivering their signals. The story is no longer on their site:
<http://www.warren-news.com/>

- International H/DTV news:

     - According to Informa Telecoms & Media, digital TV (of any form,
including cable & satellite) had made the following inroads in eastern Europe:
                 Thousands     Households
Czech Republic        90            2.4%
Hungary              140            3.6%
Poland              1085            8.6%
Romania                2            0%
Russia              1091            2.1%
rest of the region  1828

     - DTT will be starting in two regions of Poland later this year:
<http://www.dmeurope.com/default.asp?ArticleID=8525>

     - Sweden is planning analog shutdown by the end of January 2008:

     - Spain is shooting for 2010:
<http://news.ft.com/cms/s/4dda52ee-e517-11d9-95f3-00000e2511c8.html>

     - 300,000 DTT reception boxes were reportedly sold to consumers in the
first three weeks of operation, the highest sales rate in the world, according
to Screen Digest. Some 500,000 boxes were reportedly sold in the UK in
Freeview's first four MONTHS, 180,000 DTT boxes were sold in Germany in their
first eight months, and 20,000 in Italy in their first month:
<http://blogs.zdnet.com/ITFacts/index.php?p=8154>

     - France's HD Forum Association has come up with an "HD-ready" label if
the following conditions are met:
          1 - widescreen display
          2 - at least 720 lines
          3 - 1080i/720p compatibility (I think)
          4 - appropriate connectivity
          5 - content protection
<http://www.advanced-television.com/2005/news_archive_2005/June20_June24.htm#france>

     - Multiplus DTT should begin in Malta this week:
<http://www.timesofmalta.com/core/article.php?id=191284>

     - According to The Australian, LG wants the Australian government to ban
sales of analog TVs starting in 2008:

     - The BBC has tested a system for datacasting HD to a PVR during
non-broadcast periods for playback simultaneously with an SD broadcast:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/hd_notebook/one.php?id=299>

     - The BBC also reported on viewing tests which found that at a standard
viewing distance of 2.7 meters, SD was acceptable on screens up to 27-inch and
720p for larger screens up to 50-inch:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/hd_notebook/one.php?id=304>

     - BBC Broadcast is being sold to Creative Broadcast Services, owned by
Macquarie:

     - Here is a story on DTT in Malaysia:
<http://www.ctimes.com.my/Highlight/20050616093953/wartrevamp>

     - In China, combined analog and digital TV sales in 2004 were over 35
million units.
<http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/050620/205667.html?.v=1>
     That's very few more than were sold in the U.S. It'll be interesting to
see how 2005's figures compare.

- NPD's "Coming In Clearer" report, based on a survey of 6280 U.S. adults in
April, found analog TVs in 96% of households. Fewer LCD TVs (76%) "had a
device attached to them" (most commonly a DVD player) than did tube TVs (89%).
I'm not sure what "a device" includes. Might this mean fewer LCD TVs being
used on cable and satellite?
<http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/050620/205521.html?.v=1>

- Based on figures from CEA, sales to U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television sets
for the first 22 weeks of 2005 were down 8.2% from the same period in 2004; my
ten-week running average was down 6.6%. For the first 23 weeks, they were down
8.3%, and my ten-week running average was down 4.8%.
     Sales of so-called "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers for the 22nd week
were 45,102 units, for the 23rd week 48,650, and for the first 23 weeks
1,696,952.
     "Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without
DTT-reception capability) accounted for about 16.3% of the TVs (not counting
plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers through the 22nd and 23rd weeks
this year. It may be worth noting here what that means. About 84% of the
non-plasma, non-direct-view-LCD TVs sold through the 23rd week this year were
still plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with picture tubes. The last time CEA
released numbers allowing the LCD and plasma TVs to be included, they raised
the "digital" percentage to about 25%; I suspect it is higher now.
     To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of
receiving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of only the DirecTV units at Best
Buy and Ultimate.

- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.
     This week's giveaways with HDTVs include standard-definition DVD recorders
and smaller LCD TVs. For models that were advertised both weeks, I chose the
lower price. Ultimate also offered a cooler with all purchases over $299 this
week.
