frequently and staying down for approx. 90 seconds before re-surfacing and
didn't stay up for very long before diving again, which made it a challenge
with the intense sun in my face, glare on the water and the bird estimated
300 yards away from me. It really put my Canon P900 to the test. New
county bird for me."

buoyant flight. Much smaller than a nearby gull (didn't see what species
the other one was), it had dark wings, partial hood, and saw limited black
on wing tips with white band proximal to it. It got harassed by another
gull and flew north and did not see it return."

- Comments: "I think? Feedback welcomed: asmeyer@xxxxxxx. Largish Larus,
bigger than CAGU but smaller than HERG. Initially picked out by
faded-looking primaries. GWGU would be larger and have a much heavier bill
(as would GLGU); CAGU should show very dark primaries in all plumages and
never show uniform pale mottling on the body plumage (I think). Slender
dark bill and extremely bright pink feet (the latter point was much more
obvious in the field than in my photos) corroborate ICGU. Sitting on the
wooden barrier just upstream of the dam. MEGU reported very close by
yesterday a no-show today."

the summit. First seen on first ascent in early morning flying downslope to
the southwest. Later, maybe the same individual hopped slowly but
deliberately up towards the trail through the rocky grass, eventually
coming within 20 ft of us and other birders. We later got within ten feet
of it for great looks off the south slope of the summit. 'The bird knows
what he's doing' '"I know I'm pretty, take my photo!'" The bird then
cheerily hopped and flew farther downslope until it was out of sight. We
didn't see it for the last 90 minutes of our log. Remarkable that this
species is here, far removed from it's normal dry conifer/rocky habitat.
Nolan has photos. Caleb has digibin photos, his first ever of any bird."

Snow Bunting flock as soon as we turned the last corner before the summit
on our first ascent in the sunrise. We saw these birds at least five
separate times, each time either near or at the summit or near the parking
lot. They landed a few times near stumps in the grasses upslope from the
parking lot, where they were temporarily invisible. But they tended to
move, and we heard them in flight several times. We heard both soft,
tinkle-rattling flight calls and harsh, burry 'jeert' calls, all
vocalizations new to Caleb. They are beautiful birds, red and white and
black, like a winter's scene. Interesting to have them up here and findable
two years in a row. Nolan wonders how stressed they are, if these are the
same birds as the previous seven, and if some of them could have either
left or perished."

- Comments: "reported at 1635 via email by John Bishop. The three were
running around the stony near n.e. tip of The Spit sticking close to the
edges of low vegetation, including gone-to-seed western goldenrod and
willow whips around knee height, when I stumbled upon them around
1740/1745. Scoped one posing on a stone that, facing me, showed all white
underparts but for tawny at sides of the breast, very nearly meeting at
center of the breast. Stubby, rather stout pinkish-yellow bill, dark
blackish at the very tip. Diagonal slash of white across dark wing. Dark V
on crown; pointy tip of V on the forehead at the base of the bill. White
face with large tawny spot at rear of the auriculars. Whitish rump, lower
back. They were observed as close as 10-15 m. using 8x42 binoculars and 20x
zoom scope; this was after sundown and when I turned back, left the
buntings, the light was fading fast. Never did see them in flight as I
didn't press them closely. One gave a soft rolling rattle call while
perched on a rock larger than a grapefruit. I'm familiar with this species.
This may be the first record for Hood River County."
