started looking for dark birds which might be the Harlan’s. I had a good
view of this bird in my binoculars and it had the clear bald pink head of a
Turkey Vulture. By the time I got out of my car with the camera it had
disappeared and I didn’t see it again"

the field east of the pin. Knowing I would regret it if I didn't give it a
look, I turned around and went back. When I got to the field the suspect
was not where I left it in the middle of the field, instead it was 100 feet
from the highway giving great looks even at 40 mph. Large buteo with white
chest and belly. Very familiar with this species. Quite a year for them in
the valley."

who visited site and confirmed 2 FEHAs in this location. Large buteos with
all white fronts, large bill, long gape. When I arrived, one FEHA was in
field on north side of Dawson Rd. It flew south to far side of south field
where I also saw the second FEHA. They were in the west half of the large
field."

seem like a BLPH. Closer look and with binoculars saw distinctly rufous
sides. Was on a log, ocean-side of grass covered dune near entrance of

- Comments: "Classic Type 2 Red Crossbill calling from atop a fir for a
couple minutes. Loud, clear, downslurred, slightly ringing "keep keep...
keep keep... keep keep" somewhat reminiscent of the "pip pip" call of an
Olive-sided Flycatcher. Low-pitched for a crossbill. It took me a second to
place this call, given how loud and stationary it was, and so different
from our other local types. Reportedly Type 2s aren't safely
distinguishable from Type 1s by ear, but Type 1 would be a longshot and
hasn't been reported west of the Mississippi this fall/winter, whereas Type
2s have been widespread west of the Cascades. So I think we can reasonable
rule out Type 1 by distribution. I anticipate more Type 2s will be heard
and recording in the Portland area over the next couple weeks, and I would
bet that closer scrutiny will reveal that they are uncommon but not at all
rare. Local eBird reviewers currently aren't accepting type-specific RECRs
without a recording, but Type 2s are quite distinctive."
