species. Large wing span, flying with crook in the wings. Hovered above
the water. Head largely white with broad black cheek patch. Made several
passes over calm part of river. Then departed down river. Hard to miss-ID

the big pool downstream from the gravel island in the steady rain.
Unmistakable, white body, crooked wings when flying, dark eyeline. I
watched it as it snagged a fish and I managed to snap some poor, distant
photos on my phone."

patch from about 10 feet away.
ID: Yellow below, olive back, distinct black cap and an unmarked yellow
face. Definitely a a bit of a surprise to see this time of year and perhaps
it didn't get the memo to fly south. Just a side note: there are still many
green leaves on salmonberry and Himalayan blackberry plants which seems
late."
