- Comments: "After a careful comparison to the <i>borealis</i> on Wilkinson
Lane, it's affirmative that this other Red-tailed Hawk is a different
individual and undoubtingly has genes of the northern race. Until late the
night of the observation, I was having difficulty deciding if this bird was
a different individual from the <i>borealis</i> as it was only a short
couple hundred yards away. Behaviorally, it was very similar to the
<i>borealis</i> as well, constantly flying very low to the ground and
erratically like a harrier, easily capturing our attention from the other
10 (four of them reported on Wilkinson checklist but easily visible from
Hawkins) Red-tailed Hawks in the vicinity.
Comparative to the nearby <i>borealis</i>, it was identical in plumage but
had significantly heavier and blobbier bellyband and very limited scapular
mottling. But otherwise had several common features consistently with those
on the northern/eastern cline; white throat, thin patagials, mostly
unmarked underwings and unmarked flags. The chances of this bird being a
<i>borealis</i> is still possible as the distinction between them and
<i>abieticola</i> is that the latter subspecies is generally more
heavily-marked and I wouldn't pass up the idea that the nearby
<i>borealis</i> is in fact its sibling that migrated with it.
And here is where we come to the conundrum of identifying Red-tailed Hawks.
What is the possibly of seeing an <i>abieticola</i> or <i>borealis</i> in
western US? Probably much higher than reported but it's infinitely harder
to find and confirmed such a vagrant because of the viability of our
breeding <i>calurus</i>. It is much easier to confirm a light more
<i>calurus</i> in the East than <i>borealis</i> in the West. When it comes
to juveniles, that doesn't help and anybody who has experience with
vagrants of any species, you'll begin to notice they're always
females/immatures like inland scoters, inland Anna's Hummingbirds, etc. So
what I'm trying to say is, if such a vagrant were to occur in
Washington/Oregon, it's more than likely going to be a juvenile who has
never completed a migration before and it jumped a pass in the Canadian
Rockies, likely ending up in the Okanagan region and spreading southward
from there. Because of the difficulty of identifying juveniles, I fit this
taxon was a better fit for this individual than just plain
<i>abieticola</i>."

distant but easy find, entire bellybreastface of bird white white, face

Excellent extended views for 45-minutes, perched and many times flying,
hovering like RWHA/kestrels do, over fields and large oak tree. — 4:08p it
started flying around, excellent scope and distant bin views of flight:
white upper rump/tail with wide rusty-diffuse-banded tip , white upper wing
patches “base of primaries” , otherwise rusty colored upperside (but
lighting gray from rainy day so red not shining out). Underside of bird in
flight mostly white, with thin black crescent of wrists, tail underside
appearing pale rusty. — FEHA continued in field to SE the entire time of
this checklist. Still seen again as of 4:32p, then seen again as chatted
with Isaac D. just before we left for yoga: weird to walk away from a
rarity, ... we walked away from the FEHA, so I got a good longer savasana
before class started, and Caleb 20-min. of homework session. — Sweet! Hope
this bird stays for this weekend so Caleb’s Bird Nerds friend Carolyn
(golden-yellow-headed researcher of Orange-crowned Warblers) can count it
on her raptor route."

well on ground through scope, showing brown post-auricular border pattern,
buff on face, diluted pale black wash across upper breast, dull rufous
nape, flank streaking on white underparts, and fairly bright rufous patch
between thin white wingbars. This bird and at least 3 more were heard
clearly while in flight — both the dry rattle call and the high whistled
"tew" call of Lapland Longspur. All were consorting with Horned Larks (at
least 85) and Savannah Sparrows (about 30) in brown exposed dirt field on
the hillside about a mile or more south of Bethel Rd. Eventually they all
flew off to the east. This is the same location where there were a large
number of Lapland Longspurs in April 2018."

- Comments: "4th Oregon record, 2nd intermountain record. Bird chasers, if
you come here, please bring seed and lay it down on the road beside the
coyote willow between the first and second parking lot. Lets keep these
cool sparrows here. Noticed immediately as melodia and from the first
moment, I knew it was this subspecies without a doubt. Key id marks, black
streaked back, black and bolder malar stripe and buff supercilium. Very
active and lost a couple times and had false alarms from the montana Song
present but none of them had the buff supercilium. Compared to montana
Song, this bird was noticeably paler with creamy light brown remiges and
tail. Underparts snowy white with very well defined crisp streaking. Brown
cheek contrasting with supercilium. Yellowish malar region. Bill short and
thick. To those chasing it, you might get a Savannah Sparrow vibe if body
is obscured. He's pretty skittish to humans but very bold to birds and acts
like top sparrow in charge."
