Large very pale gull with pale wingtips and stout black-tipped pink bill.
Side-by-side with ring-billed, California, and especially Bonaparte's gulls
made it look enormous.
1st or 2nd winter bird - appeared to be a first winter bird with dark eye
and somewhat finely marked back and wings, though also observed at a
distance through a scope."

yesterday by Peter Low. — poor digiscope photos— large gull, totally white
wingtips. — flew at 1:00 then swimming — huge enormous gull, so huge next
to tiny ~ BOGU. Also much larger than CA/RB gulls flying about. Uniformly
colored plumage. In our poor light situation and at such distance, body
colored appeared grayish, but when a bit of sun shone on it later, could
see how gleaming white gull is where sun hit. Large/long bill. Tom C and
Caleb could somewhat make out bicolored bill. They also saw totally white
wingtips when spread wings. — New county bird for all of us, first ever
record for central or eastern Oregon. — Glad it isn’t a lifer, because the
view was terribly distant, wouldn’t have had sure confidence to ID it from
so far away, if not for Tom C being here and with his better quality and
zooming scope than Caleb’s."

any other gull out there and more than double the size of the 2 Bonaparte’s
Gulls that were out there. The bird appeared to be a first winter bird,
though it was difficult to tell with certainty from that distance. We
could see a fairly pale gray body and white wing tips both when it was
standing and when it flapped its wings. When it held its head a certain
way we could see a long, two-tone bill with a black tip. I took a bunch of
pictures, but given the distance, I’m not sure if any are identifiable.

is a kingbird. Large bill with notched tail rules out Western and Cassin's.
The bird flew up, circled, and returned to nearby perches several times
before eventually flying north to another tree near the sewage ponds.
I first saw this bird after the sun had already gone down. It did not call.
It was located at the corner immediately south of the Bay City sewage
ponds, shown as Spuce Street and Elliott Street on Google."

NO crossbills whatsoever found today. Bummer we couldn’t find any to
record/document any vocals/foraging. Yay for Negative data!
We did find gray rosy-finches twice, and an EVGR once. Otherwise no finches.
Temps prob colder out here today than nearest weather stations which logged
~ 17-27. Not even windy at all out here today, and still SOO cold!
We feel lucky we came out today, as seems to us that surely the Cascade
Lakes Hwy gates will prob be closed for winter tomorrow. Several inches of
snow on roads today N. of Wickiup Res., passable in 4WD truck but risky to
drive off main roads so we didn’t. Big snow dump forecast coming Monday
night, 8-in. in Sisters, should be enough here to close this pass between
Bachelor and ~ Lava Lake.
So, today we are getting our closest possibility of seeing this section of
high forest in winter, as these first snow days of winter come upon us, but
just before road is closed for months.
Conclusion?
Not a lot of birds out here! Bird density is low. We did many point count
stops beginning 8:15am (sunrise 6:54a), and many stops without any birds,
or just a VATH.
Highlights were two rosy-finch encounters, refound first county record of
GLAUCOUS GULL, a PAWR in sage bush, a WHWO, group of CAJA, and many
beautiful VATH.
Plenty of Lodgepole Pines with plenty of cones but not necessarily cones
with seeds. Mountain Hemlocks with some but not a lot of cones.
Douglas-firs, Engelmann Spruces, and Western White pines all with some but
not a lot of cones. Ponderosa Pines with plenty of cones, also hard to tell
how many seeds."

- Comments: "(Rare): “Unreported”: seen well by all three of us. Tom C may
have got photos. Rosy-finch with entirely gray face/cheek/head. Body an
allover warm mid brown color, back and breast same brown; with also the
rosy pinkish color of esp belly showing sometimes more strikingly. Wings
flashing grayish underside in flight. Spotted by Caleb on sand of marsh
edge, ID’d quick by Courtney, and then ID’d by Caleb to subspecies,
Courtney confirmed. We had already seen a group of them earlier this
morning at Sparks Lake. Rosy finch fed along grass edge a bit and then flew
up into blocky lava flow, flying around to different rock perches a few
minutes before flying off away.

Red Crossbill research day along Cascade Lakes Hwy, Todd Lake (6060 ft)
down to Davis Lake (4400 ft).
NO crossbills whatsoever found today. Bummer we couldn’t find any to
record/document any vocals/foraging. Yay for Negative data! ...
We did find gray rosy-finches twice, and an EVGR once. Otherwise no finches.
Temps prob colder out here today than nearest weather stations which logged
~ 17-27. Not even windy at all out here today, and still SOO cold!

exactly 9 flew in close over us and eyelevel within 10ft, and low over
creek landed in snowy grasses, foraging in meadow, then took off again, our
scope wasn’t set up with legs out yet so we couldn’t scope them to see
which subspecies. Note: 1 overall had body plumage a lot whiter than the
others; same size as. — when first flew in, thought of “bluebirds”, flight
style, though flocking tighter than bluebirds — their flight is definitely
