- Comments: "(Rare) Female-type. Photos. Visiting my feeder all morning and
into the afternoon, though less frequently as the day warmed. In various
competition with an Anna's an a rufous Hummingbird too, making for
spectacular sky battles.
Photos show a hummingbird with an all green back and central tail feathers,
a long and stout tail longer than the wings at rest, a delicate neatly
speckled throat pattern on a clean whitish background, and buffy sides.
Additional details not seen in the photos but viewed well in binoculars on
its various visits include full spread tail patterns with orange bases and
broad white tips to the outer feathers but no orange color on the back,
rump, or all-green central feathers. Front view of gorget shows the bird
doesn't have any small central patch, just delicate flecking that gets
sparser at the throat. In several side-by-side comparisons with the other
two hummingbirds, this one is intermediate between them (larger than
rufous, smaller than Anna's).
Subjectively, the overall gestalt of the hummer was more robust than the
rufous, too.
I believe that versus a female-type rufous, the tail color, size, and
structure, the overall body size, and the details of the throat and flanks,
are consistent with a Broad-tailed Hummingbird, which is an Oregon bird for
me."
