offshore. Size appeared consistent with my experience with Aleutians and
more substantial than minima. Somewhat steep forehead angle to small bill,
proportionately large white cheek patch, well-defined relatively wide white
collar extending to hindneck, bordered below by narrow dark sub-collar
which contrasted noticeably with fairly light medium pale breast."

- Comments: "*Very rare in Harney, complete surprise. Saw a bright russet
thrush in the willows north of the trail by the pond in the oasis. Flew to
a new perch where we observed it for about thirty seconds, too buried in
the brush to get a photo, but seen well through binoculars. Plain russet
wing/upperparts contrasted with smooth whitish-gray flanks, belly, and
underparts. No hint of brown in the flanks. Chest lightly spotted with
brown/buffy mottling, blending into a plain face with a pale eyering and
dark eye. The plain face with russet-brown crown/nape almost gave it a
"cute" look with a subtle capped/hooded appearance to my eye. Two
Swainson's in the area, one fairly russet bird and one "olive-backed.""

.25 mile up traIL where trail is fairly close to the creek. You can look
across and see skunk cabbage. The bird flew to different locations as I
tried to see it, finally perching in view. Brown above with yellow front,

our way out. The warbler was bouncing between some young pines in the dip
heading to the parking lot, no more than five feet behind Alan Contreras
and Mark Ludwick, who were observing another bird. I tried to get their
attention due to closeness which was reason why I didn't see the bird well
in the binoculars but what I did see through the naked eye at 25 feet was a
black and white striped passerine that was incredibly energetic, bouncing
from one tree trunk to another and back up the way it came. Dan and
Jennifer for a brief moment got the bird perched on the trunk with no light
or plant obscurities and confirmed my suspicions of this being the
continuing bird. I got a look through binos once and saw the distinctly
striped head. Shortly after the that, the warbler started bouncing up into
the foliage and took off to the south towards the cottonwoods. No other
birder saw it despite desperate searches afterward. A nuthatch was found
during our group search, which was suggestable as the culprit at the time
but what I remember seeing was a striped body, not just the head, as it was
its contrasting plumage was what got my attention in the first. And if that
was what I saw from the naked eye, I'm a little jealous Dan and Jennifer
got it with the binos clearly. I also found the behavior of the warbler
different from the nuthatch as the nuthatch was only lethargically climbing
up the cottonwood, not bouncing back and forth between the pines 3 feet off
the ground. I am more than positive that was the warbler, it was just
unfortunate no other birder saw it besides us but we watched the warbler
starting going into the canopy with Audubon's Warblers, Yellow Warblers,
nuthatches and pewees were active, making it hard to track. Though we think
it traveled south to the cottonwoods, due to the high activity in the
canopy, it could've easily backtracked across the trail."

- Comments: "I’m taking the time to submit this because I had never seen
this bird at my feeders before. I have had a flock of evening grosbeaks
frequenting my property for a few weeks, and a few black-headed grosbeaks,
but this was strikingly a red/rose-breasted grosbeak. It was so beautiful.
I have never had a bird with such brilliant red at my feeders before. The
only hint of red I ever see is from a house finch or red-winged black bird.
This was clearly a rose-breasted grosbeak. Just beautiful."

road outside the CG entrance, singing about 50-100 m beyond the water
