- Comments: "Passed overhead quite low as we were coming back (east side of
the hill, about 2:55 PM). All black, large swift with long, swept back
wings. When I first saw the approaching silhouette, I thought it was going
to be a kestrel flying into the breeze, but as it got closer I realized it
was a BLSW. Passed over pretty low, moving to the west/northwest, overhead,
in good light (sun behind us as we watched it approach). Then it gained
elevation and circled north of the narrows, and eventually, still climbing,
it disappeared over the top of the hill. Wing beats were much slower than
the frantic beats of a Vaux's Swift, it had more of a tail (whole body was
less cigar-shaped), and it also lacked the pale throat and upper chest of
the VASW (which would have been evident with the good view we had at the
low elevation it passed over us). Flight style, wing shape and relatively
short head not right for a male Purple Martin either. I know this is late
in the day for a BLSW sighting, but there were a lot of showers in the
area, especially to the south. As it flew away from us, I tried for a
photo, but it was moving away quickly and all I got were pretty cloud
pictures."

able to stay on it with my binoculars for a good 5 min before it flew
towards the cliffs. Larger than Vaux’s Swift, all dark, didn’t vocalize,
slower wingbeats as it circled with a group of Violet-green Swallows and
then flew towards the cliffs."

seen on the crown but it was above me so that wouldn't be visible. It came
within 2 meters of me while I was talking to a woman about bird watching

seeing. This species was seen commonly (usually several individuals each
day) throughout the winter and is very well known to me."

rects) when it flew up from roadside as I was driving through. The bird
looped a short distance over grass field, then returned to roadside. I
suspected Lark Sparrow and went back to confirm distinctive bobwhite-like
face pattern. Took a few poor photos. The bird was foraging in coarse
gravel along the roadside, being pestered by a couple of territorial
Savannah Sparrows from the adjoining grass-seed field."

bluff side right near the north entrance,
perched unubstructed on the top of a bush and calling persistently. I was
able to circle around and come in close over 15 minutes or so, examine my
Sibley's at leisure while he stayed put. Morphology a good match, including
the unique tail coloring (half light, then half dark, lengthwise). His song
was a solid match as well, double-checking."
