Looked small, kind of wet and bedraggled. Brushed it off as poss weird
Rough-legged morph (lots in the area), then noticed lack of feathered legs.
Finally came to intermediate type-juvenile Swainson's Hawk. Dark breast,
spots on belly, barred tail, very long pointed wings. Photos."

- Comments: "Noticed interactions between NOHA female and SEOW at distance
in E end of open area. The hawk wheeled on owl, both in flight and chased
the owl. Good comparison of size, shape and colors. SEOW was broad winged,
tan: buff. And smaller than hawk. I was able to follow the owls flight for
several seconds afterward. Near dark 5:12pm. Familiar with species."

from 1:20-1:45pm, then chased away by RBSA. Roughly same size, perhaps
slightly larger than adult red-breasted sapsucker. Similar overall shape.
Black tail and back. White rump patch and wing bar. Two white facial
stripes, one above eye from eyebrow to nape, the other from top of beak
below eye to ear. Head and neck otherwise black but for red chin/throat
stripe parallel to beak. Large yellow area from legs to neck. Black and
white checked spots on flanks and under wings."

- Comments: "Heard distinctive "chrt" call note about a dozen times, then
miraculously pished it up from a great distance, looking east from new
culvert. Smallish bird, about half the size of nearby Song Sparrows, with
olive-green upperparts and bright yellow on throat and upper breast. Dull,
colorless belly. Unique shape with shortish tail; too far to see many
plumage details."
