Hi Sue, I presume you've discovered the Universal Access features of OS X 
(System Preferences).

The *crude* (and, it definitely is crude) voice recognition features are 
hidden a little deeper. Check out "Speech" in the System Preferences and 
explore. Some of the commands hidden there may prove useful.
