A removable drive probably doesn't "report itself" to the O/S
until it has a disk in it. It's a hardware/driver thing and not
something about WinXP. Think of your removable drive as a floppy
drive - granted it's a big, fast floppy ... but it is still
handled in the same way that floppies were handled way back in
the days when MS-DOS was the best operating system you could run.
