Linda, Roy,
I just tried doing what Roy suggested - change the font info by right
clicking the text box > font
I save the presentation, and sure enough, when I load it again, the
changes have stuck!
So it doesn't change the default for a new presentation, but it does
seem to stick with a saved file.
The caveat - This is in the beta of PowerPoint 11 NOT XP :-( =20
But at least it seems they have fixed for the next release.

changed on the Formatting tool bar for the text box. -
