Draw a textbox (drawing toolbar, textbox icon) on the slide. Type some text. Format it as you want. Then go to Format/Font and click the option for "default for new objects." This should make whatever you've set the default for new textboxes (as opposed to placeholders, which, as you all know, are set on the slide master). This is the same sequence you'd use for PPT 2002/XP as well. I just tested here on PPT 97 using Algerian as the font, 40 pt as the size, and a maroon as the color.
